Out in meat-space, it was a busy day today — all around.

If a tree falls in the woods, but Your Montag isn’t there to write an inane snarky comment about it, does it make a noise?

Hope you had a good day, Kind Reader.

A Regular Fucking Robbing Hood

Jack Ass-ramoff aint that bad! He’s not just a corrupt, power-seeking, megalomaniacal robber barron after all.

He was, they said, a champion for the underprivileged who donated much of his riches — even the ill-gotten — to charity; a principled racquetball player who called fouls on himself; a dedicated father who once spent a night searching for a lost hamster.

I do like how they say, “He was,” like they’re eulogizing his dead ass. It’s not just that one either. A lot of the testimonials are told in the past tense:

  • “Tragically, Mr. Abramoff led two lives…”
  • “He was a natural crusader and political activist…”
  • “Jack was the kind of person who would offer his guest a glass of water if a server wasn’t around to do so…”

What gives? Is the guy dead? I didn’t hear. Did he croak?

Wait, here’s a couple other quotes that might shed some light:

  • “Jack was a selfless patriot for most of the time I knew him.”
  • “Jack was a good friend, and even your good friends at times do wrong things[.]“

Oh— I get it… HAHAHAHAHAH!

Another Banner Day at Stump Lane

Yesterday we had 260 visits. This time, though it was because of spammers. Let me just address one of you, Mr. “Poker Casino,” if that’s even your real name, not one of your 288 comments got through to the site yesterday. Nor will they ever. So suck my ass, asshead.

If anybody knows anything about such things is watching, what is the best solution for comment spam? I currently moderate all comments from first time commenters, which works, but the process has become a nuisance thanks to shitbirds like Poker Casino, and She Got Tired of Texas Hold ‘Em. Should we employ word verification, or some kind of filter? (I fear a filter might also erroneously stop legitimate comments.)

Any feedback will be appreciated.

[Cross-posted at Braindead Shithead.]

Playground contraption 1It was a steel pole about eight feet tall, stuck in the ground. At the top a rotating hoop about two feet in diameter, with four or five steel chains equally spaced around the circumference of the hoop. The chains hung down and had forged steel handles at the end three or four feet off the ground.

It was essentially a more modern, more brutal version of the contraption pictured at this link.

Playground contraption 2In it’s normal mode of operation, a group of kids would hold on to the handles and run around the perimeter, jumping off the ground occasionally and swinging out.

To be honest, it wasn’t much of a ride. But we were industrious kids. It wouldn’t take long to devise a way to make this thing more thrilling…

Russian Spies (but not the beautiful seductive female kind that hapless scientists give up Cold War technology secrets to in the movies.)

Is this another one of those things that get’s released on Friday afternoon in hopes that nobody notices?

Now, all accounts say that this involved inaccurate (to some extent) information, and that it had no bearing on the outcome of the US invasion of Iraq…

BUT

It turns out the Russians were spying on US and passing the information on to Saddam during the start of the invasion.

Captured Iraqi documents describe a Russian spy operation that was aimed at the United States Central Command in the early days of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to a new American military report. The report says information on war plans and troop movements was passed through the Russian ambassador in Baghdad.

That’s huge, right? Not in terms of how the invasion went, but in terms of our dealings with Russia.

What gives? I’m out of it for a little while and the place blows up. Stump Lane had 217 visits yesterday. It may not seem like a lot; but up to now, a good day for us has been if we break 100 visits.

There is a curious correlation in that yesterday Norbizness added us to his “links” section. (Thanks.) Our stat machine counted five clicks from that link. I assume— while not really knowing how it works —that there was also an increase in clicks from blo.gs due to Norbizness’ kind act. But these alone don’t account for a whole hundred extra visits. Could it be spammers pinging us, (or whatever it is that they do?) There was not an inordinate amount of comment spam to deal with, though. Nor was there an inordinate amount of actual comments. (Hint hint.)

Who knows? Alls I know is, I missed it. Maybe I should be sick and cop out on posting more often, if that is what it takes. I can’t wait to see what happens next time I take a vacation.

Still not 100% today, and I didn’t read the news this morning, so no ‘news dump’. I may try to post something later.

I did hear something about this on the Rachel Maddow Show this morning: Meatpacker Sparks Mad Cow Testing Fight

[A Kansas meatpacker,] Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to look for the [mad cow] disease in every animal it processes. The Agriculture Department has said no. Creekstone says it intends to sue the department. [Emphasis added.]

That’s so hilarious, I forgot to chortle.

Happy Thursday, everybody.

Sick day. Your Montag will be ill all day today. Stick around, though and check out some recent posts…

Or watch/listen to/read yesterday’s Democracy Now! show: Here and here.

Or, for more on the Haditha story and Iraq in general, read Norbizness’es post from yesterday.

If you read nothing else mentioned here, read Riverbend’s latest post.

Provided that I am not actually dying of Anthrax or some shit, I shall return as soon as possible.
