Red Sox–yankees: Starting Tonight

Remember this scene from last year’s American League Championship Series? So surreal and unsettling? So sad to see conflated with America’s pastime? So strange that that many cops could materialize, at a moment’s notice, right there on the diamond?

Well we got plenty more of that for you right here.

A deployment plan obtained by the newspaper calls for 876 officers and commanders to be on duty for each of three games starting Friday night.

Only 334 officers were deployed the night 21-year-old Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove was killed last October when she was shot in the eye by a pepper pellet gun following a Red Sox victory over the Yankees.

To my brothers and sisters of Red Sox Nation: Party hard. I’ll be right there with you in spirit. But please, keep your head and keep it chill. Don’t create the rationale for this creeping police state to bring down the crushing boot. Because I don’t want to be right there with you getting shot — even if only in spirit.

GO SOX!

Our National Debt

UPDATED: Upon receipt of a second disbatch clarifying the original (which shouldn’t have really needed any clarification at all, as it turns out.) —M

A friend, or at least an acquaintance with whom things seem to be friendly, sent me an email pointing to this graph:

United States National Debt

The accompanying message was short and unforthcoming— just shy of cryptic. The message simply said “our national debt” and then there was the link.

I am not sure what to make of it; but I am too embarrassed to ask, “Why me?” “Why this graph?” “What is this person trying to communicate to me?” “What kind of feedback does this person want from me?” “What is the meaning of this obvious solicitation for communication before me?” “Is this an actual obvious solicitation for communication at all?”

“Why do you subject me to our national debt and the Presidents responsible for it?”

Yes. I realize many of those are the same question just worded differently. I posses a mind of limited scope. I lack intellectual training. And this lack goes far beyond my gross failure to discern the meaning of my correspondent’s message. (IMPORTANT! Please. Please note that’s a two ‘r’ correspondent.) The extent of my mathematical ability is illustrated by the unearned ‘D’ I got in the my first semester of Calculus and Analytical Geometry and the subsequent ‘F’ I received in my second semester of Calculus and Analytical Geometry and my subsequent dropping out of Engineering school.

Nonetheless, I observe the graph.
